In 2019, Portugal issued a commemorative €2 coin dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the beginning of Ferdinand Magellan's first circumnavigation expedition. This release became part of the European commemorative coin series honoring significant historical events and outstanding figures.
The expedition led by the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan began in 1519 and entered history as the first voyage to demonstrate that circumnavigation of the Earth was possible. Although Magellan himself was killed during the expedition in 1521, his crew completed the journey in 1522, achieving one of the greatest geographical accomplishments of the Age of Discovery.
Coin Design
The inner part of the coin features a portrait of Fernão de Magalhães, the Portuguese name of the famous explorer. The design also includes elements associated with maritime exploration and the Age of Discovery.
The coin bears the following inscriptions:
"CIRCUM NAVEGAÇÃO" – circumnavigation;
"1519 FERNÃO DE MAGALHÃES" – the explorer's name and the year the expedition began;
"PORTUGAL 2019" – the issuing country and year.
The coin combines historical significance with a modern design, making it appealing to both commemorative euro coin collectors and history enthusiasts.
