On January 23, 1962, the postal administration of the Republic of San Marino issued one of its most renowned thematic stamp sets dedicated to the history of the automobile. The issue consists of 15 stamps (Scott Nos. 494–508, Michel Nos. 704–718) depicting early automobiles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, illustrating the formative years of the automotive industry.

The stamp designs were created by the Italian artist Corrado Mancioli. The high-quality photogravure printing process allowed for the detailed depiction of the technical features and distinctive appearance of these pioneering automobiles.
